US Military Operation on Caracas Fuels Anxieties of Potential Greenland Acquisition.

Recent American military action in the South American nation and the capture of its leader have ignited apprehension regarding Washington's ambitions on Greenland. Supporters of the former president's political movement have allegedly set their sights on the strategically important landmass following the events in the southern hemisphere.

Provocative Messages and Official Outrage

Only a short time after the commencement of the Venezuelan operation, a prominent conservative podcaster, who is the spouse of a high-ranking White House aide, shared a symbolic image. The picture showed Greenland covered in the stars and stripes, with the single-word caption: "SOON."

This blatant threat to annex the mineral-rich region, which is a part of the NATO alliance, provoked immediate and strong condemnation from Danish officials.

"Denmark and the US are strong partners and should continue to work together as such. US security is equally the Arctic's and Denmark’s security," stated the Copenhagen's envoy to the United States. "The Kingdom of Denmark and the US collaborate to ensure security in the Arctic."

The diplomat additionally pointed out that Denmark had substantially boosted its defence spending recently, earmarking a large amount specifically for Northern and North Atlantic defence. "Furthermore, we expect full recognition for the sovereign borders of the Kingdom of Denmark," he added.

Administrative Moves and Strategic Interests

The situation were further complicated by the recent appointment of a US state governor as a special envoy to Greenland. The appointee had publicly expressed gratitude to the commander-in-chief, saying it was an "honour" to work in a volunteer capacity to "make Greenland a part of the US."

After the events in Venezuela, this representative praised the administration's decisive move, connecting it to the broader "war on drugs."

Ever since returning to office, the US president has repeatedly alarmed European allies with his expressed interest in Greenland. The territory is viewed as vitally strategic for national security and potential resource extraction. It currently hosts the most northerly US military base.

Refusing to Rule Out Force

In a significant television appearance, the president declined to rule out the use of military force to acquire Greenland. This stance comes amid intensifying great-power competition in the polar region. "I don't rule it out. I don't say I'm going to do it, but I don't rule out anything... We need Greenland very badly," he remarked.

He characterized Greenland as having a "very small amount of people, which we’ll look after, and we’ll cherish them... But we need that for global security."

Growing Friction and Local Resistance

In reaction to this persistent "drumbeat" of intent, Danish intelligence service took the extraordinary step last month of labelling the United States as a "security risk."

The leaders of both Greenland delivered a unified and stern statement: "We have said it very clearly before. Now we say it again... You must not take over other countries."

Public opinion in Greenland shows a complex picture. While a vast majority of the island's residents seek independence from Copenhagen, there is also little to no desire to become part of the United States. The territory has had the legal right to seek sovereignty for many years.

Expert Assessment: A Plausible Threat?

Some analysts are increasingly reconsidering the likelihood of such a action. One thinktank director specializing in military analysis admitted she had once dismissed the rhetoric but was "now not so sure."

"Logistically, it would be feasible for the US to station a few hundred or a couple thousand soldiers inside of Greenland, and it's not clear to me which power could do anything about it," she observed.
