The Baldur's Gate 3 Creators Reveal a New Divinity, Labeling it Their Largest RPG Yet

The speculation around the recent awards show reached a fever pitch, notably after host Geoff Keighley posted an enigmatic photo of a strange statue. The question is finally answered. The acclaimed developer is creating a brand-new Divinity game.

Revealed to be Divinity, the game was showcased with a daring trailer packed with memorable imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to scenes of revelry and the very unleashing of hell.

A Different Direction

For those anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. Larian clarified that a third Original Sin game to its beloved RPGs is not being worked on now.

Nevertheless, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a continuation of the main series. This choice of words suggests that the team might be crafting a faster-paced experience as opposed to another tactical title. Currently, we can only guess, as only a teaser video is available.

The Legacy of Divinity

The Divinity series is widely praised and it's fair to claim it kicked off the recent resurgence of complex computer role-playing games. These games are defined by detailed worlds, player agency, and deep class systems—traits that recently reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its world is classic fantasy, what makes Divinity apart is the remarkable agency given to the player.

Where many modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is full of unique possibilities that are viable if you're playing as a distinct build with a specific history of choices.

The series is also notoriously flexible, allowing players to find creative solutions throughout the entire experience. Nearly every quest can be approached in a variety of manners, sometimes in unexpected fashion.

  • You might find an answer because you heeded something a dog told you.
  • Or, you could overcome an obstacle by moving environmental hazards in a unorthodox way.

The Journey Continues

It is this design philosophy that allow people to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games in history. Now, players can look forward to another adventure in this legendary franchise.
