Australia's captain Poised for a Key Part in Ashes Series

Test match action

Pat Cummins has taken over 300 dismissals in 71 appearances with an stellar bowling average.

The Australian chair of selectors George Bailey has declared that pace spearhead Cummins will have a crucial role in the upcoming historic rivalry.

Speculation had been growing that Cummins might miss the series due to a persistent back stress problem that remained unresolved.

Initial reports from team management suggested no official announcement had been made regarding whether he would play, with the extended contest kicking off on November 21 in Western Australia.

The selector shared that his recovery is on track and was "optimistic" about the prospects of taking part.

"We know that the window is narrowing and multiple considerations at play, not only the back issue, but additional elements," he commented.

"It's positive. [We are] really confident that he's going to play a major part. Ideally from the opening match. Otherwise, then we'll pick it up."

Injury History

The captain missed the ODI and T20 games against New Zealand and India in the previous weeks after examinations confirmed a stress reaction in his back.

There is a track record of back injuries, with recurrences in multiple past seasons causing him to miss multiple domestic campaigns in a short span.

He emphasized he would be proactive in his approach in his recovery plan to ensure his availability for the contest.

He mentioned that he did not know if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his rehabilitation but acknowledged it was "pressing" for him to recover fully for the opener.

Alternative Arrangements

If he's unavailable, former captain Steve Smith will assume leadership.

All-rounder Cameron Green was withdrawn recently from the national team for their one-day international series against the subcontinent side as a preventive step because of soreness in his side.

Bailey described it as a "slight concern and mentioned that Green will play in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "well-prepared to deliver overs."

"We put so much time has gone into developing the strategy for him to be available for the first Test as an batting and bowling option," he elaborated.

"His involvement was limited to the first two ODIs regardless. His aggressive style the willow in shorter formats, if it causes any delay for 24 more hours, we just made the decision to approach this more conservatively."
